We're excited to have a bunch of top-notch players playing with the band tomorrow night, including special guests Jeff Marrs on drums, Mike Olmos, Ian Carey and Cameron Summers on trumpet, and Ken Moran, Matt Zebly and Alex Murzyn on saxophones. We'll be playing some tunes we haven't played for a while, including Henry Hung's epic "You get a solo, and you get a solo, and you get a solo...."! Hope to see you there!
Emerging Jazz Composer Competition Winners!
Jazz in the Neighborhood is pleased to announce the winners of its first Emerging Jazz Composer Competition. The competition was made possible in part by a grant from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and culminates in performances of the 10 top compositions by the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, at a special concert on Saturday, Aug. 29th at Doc's Lab in San Francisco.
The three finalists are: Javier Nero, of Miami, FL, Aaron Bahr, of Brooklyn, NY, and Shai Golan, of Northridge, CA. The Electric Squeezebox Orchestra will determine after the performance which pieces will win the first place ($500), second place ($300) and third place ($100) prizes.
The other seven composers who received honorable mentions and will have their works performed and recorded at the concert are: Nathaniel Schwartz, of Los Angeles, CA, Dan Neville, of SF, CA, Austin Chanu, of Los Angeles, CA, Liberté-Anne Lymberiou of NYC, Christopher Main of the SF Bay Area, David Von Kampen, of Lincoln, NE and Joe Ricard of Boston, MA.
Special thanks to Doc's Lab for their help and support in this endeavor.
Coming up Sunday- the ESO with special guest John Santos
We've got a great show planned for Sunday, when master percussionist John Santos and master drummer David Flores join the band. We'll be playing Latin Jazz, Salsa, Brazilian grooves, funk, and other grooves that feature these two great musicians, all arranged and organized by members of the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra.
Tomorrow Night at Doc's Lab: ESO with Mike Barsimanto Trio!
We're excited to have drummer Mike Barsimanto's excellent trio opening up for us! We'll be playing music composed and arranged by Charlie Gurke, Darren Johnston, Doug Morton, Mike Zilber, Erik Jekabson, Alan Ferber, Matt Wong and Matt Zebley, and we hope to see you there!
We're back with a Bang! Featuring the music of Alan Ferber this Sunday.
We'll be back for our weekly residency starting this Sunday, and we're super excited to be featuring the music and playing of trombonist/composer Alan Ferber! This Grammy-nominated musician has played with a who's who of the modern jazz scene since moving to NYC back in the late 90's, and continues to compose and arrange his own music, both for his critically acclaimed nonet and his big band, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2014.
Final Show before July Break! Jazz in the Neighborhood and El Cerrito HS Quintet!
We have one more show before the ESO takes a month off and members of the band lead their small groups at Doc's Lab in July, and it's going to be a good one! Jazz in the Neighborhood and Doc's Lab are co-sponsoring the event and it will feature an opening set from the El Cerrito HS Jazz Quintet.
Mike Zilber leads the Band on Sunday!
Please join the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra on Sunday when tenor and soprano saxophonist Michael Zilber leads the band. He's been on the Bay Area scene for many years, and led the his own Carma big band in many performances throughout the Bay Area. This will be a show to not miss!
Show Tomorrow Night!
We're excited to have a bunch of super subs coming in to play with us tomorrow, including a dream team rhythm section of Adam Shulman, piano, Luke Westbrook, guitar, Jeff Marr, drums and Hans Glawischnig, bass! Things will be cookin' for sure. We hope to see you there!
Thanks! The Kickstarter has been funded!
Thank you so much for helping fund the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra's Kickstarter project raising funds for our debut CD "Cheap Rent"! We had 130 backers and raised $9526.00, 112% of what we were going for. I'm really happy we'll be putting out our CD, and we even have a little seed money for our next recording, because we want to continue documenting our band members' compositions and arrangements. It was a wonderful feeling seeing everyone from here in the SF Bay Area and around the world kick in to help a local band made up of incredible musicians, composers and arrangers who are doing it basically just for the love of it.
Big thanks to Doc's Lab, without which this never would have been possible!

This Sunday- special youth guest band, celebrating Hung and Gurke, and the final week of the kickstarter!
We're still basking in the glow of Kenny Washington's incredible performance last Sunday, but are also incredibly excited to put on our final show before our kickstarter campaign ends on April 15th. We'll have another special youth ensemble opening up for us at 6pm- the Jazzschool's Advanced High School Jazz Workshop II, which features some of the best young players around. They'll perform a set of originals and cutting edge modern compositions before the ESO takes over at 6:45pm. We'll be featuring compositions of Charlie Gurke and Henry Hung since they'll be on a hiatus from the band until the summer due to their busy schedules. Come hang out and have a musical night with us! And just a reminder: catch the KSCM 91.1FM broadcast of us performing live at Doc's Lab this coming Thursday April 9th at 9pm PST.
