Cheap Rent is a fun, groove-based piece. It features a 12/8 clave that can be found in many traditional forms of music with roots in Western Africa. It also makes use of a "call and response" melodic technique, unison bass/electric guitar lines, a single chord improvisation for one soloist, and the use of both non-diatonic root movements and augmented chords for another. This piece, in a predetermined and rhythmic way, also makes use of some extended techniques, exploring the sounds that can be made by the sax, trombone, and trumpet sections.

The Falling Dream is a raucous piece with a very chromatic melody. It uses both a shuffle feel and a quarter note swing feel, with solos over both an open pedal Gb and a song form that is essentially Confirmation changes with a different bridge. It features a particularly challenging trumpet soli section, and although only two primary soloists, many four bar solos get tossed across the whole ensemble.
